Since 2013, Art Week has presented contemporary art in collaboration with the art field actors in Copenhagen and neighbouring Malmö. From major players such as Nikolaj Kunsthall, Kunsthal Charlottenborg and Louisiana, to galleries and experimental project spaces, the festival presents close to 200 exhibitions and events and amplifies the public voice of the visual arts in Copenhagen.
The 2024 festival is presented under the new name Art Matter Festival.
The festival is part of the larger Art Matter platform (formerly kunsten.nu), which also operates an online art guide and an art magazine. Art Matter Festival provides moments for insight, understanding, celebration, reflection, and love for art. Art Matter is built upon the Art Matter Foundation, which since 2008 has been Denmark’s leading disseminator of art.
Art Matter aims to broaden engagement with the visual arts by presenting new encounters with art and artists, making contemporary art and artists’ roles in society visible, and stimulating conversations about art. By showcasing the diverse producers and facets of contemporary art, the festival provides pathways for more people to explore the experiences and insights that contemporary art holds. Visitors can listen to artist talks, participate in workshops, come along for exhibition tours, float between art bars and exhibitions, experience exciting performances, dance at boisterous opening parties, and more.
Among notable events at this years’ festival are:
A grand opening party at Kunsthal Nikolaj, featuring the performance entitled Free-fall by Miriam Kongstad, What Meets the Eye by Lotte Sigh, and the premier of Got Your Back by the graduating students from Copenhagen Contemporary Dance School. The evenings soundtrack and live DJ-ing by abolish i (Simin Stine Ramezanali and Maryam Fazeli aka moraya).
Exhibitions and artist talks by Kamilla Jørgensen (Sports Illustrated) and Ellis Achong Karker (Around A Sun) at Skold Contemporary, a contemporary art space in changing rooms three and six of Østerbro Football Stadium.
At O—Overgaden, The Sick/Crip Body as Fetisch Object, A lecture-based pornografic screening by Panteha Abareshi.
